Faslane Peace Camp
Faslane Peace Camp is the longest running occupied peace camp in the world. It was established to challenge the deployment of the nuclear arsenal and nuclear submarines at Faslane Naval base. Over the years, the camp has been fertile ground for different forms of protest and direct action. In 1995, a Greenham woman, Georgina Smith, bought a plot of land in nearby Coulport to support the peace movement - this has helped to bolster the protest activities. At various points protesters have breached the Naval Base perimeter by cutting the fence, in canoes or by swimming into the base waters. Road blockades and lock-ons have disrupted the moving of Trident missile warheads. One of the high points of activity was the 2006 'Faslane 365' campaign which aimed to maintain a continuous protest at the base for a whole year. In June 2022, the camp celebrated 40 years with protests and blockades.
